Ear Candling Instructions

  1. Never perform ear candling alone!  Have another person assist you in this procedure.

  2. What you will need:

    i.  A 12" x 12" sheet of aluminum foil or a paper plate with a small dime size hole in the center.
    ii.  Matches or lighter
    iii.  A cotton Q-tip (3)
    iv.  A cup of water

  3. Before use, make sure the small tapered end of the ear candle fits snugly in your ear canal.  First you may need to cut or trim the tapered end with a razor edge to increase the diameter to fit the ear properly.  In either case, make sure that the tapered end is open and free of obstruction; this can be done by using a pencil point end to form a proper opening free of obstructions.

  4. Lie on your side or sit upright and have your assistant place the aluminum foil or paper plate with the small hole centered over your ear.  Place the tapered end of the ear candle through the hole so that the ear candle is absolutely vertical at all times during the procedure unless you are in an upright position - in this case the ear candle must be at an upright angle. Place a damp towel over your hair to prevent burn damage caused by the ear candle. An upright position is not recommended.

  5. While in position have your assistant set a flame the large end of the ear candle. Never do this yourself.  During the burn procedure make sure that no smoke escapes from around the tapered end.  You must adjust your position and or the candles’ position in order to stop this from happening.  If this doesn’t work, put out the flame with the cup of water and start over with a new ear candle making sure to follow procedure (c) in order to get a better fit.  The failure to get this done correctly is the number one reason for which ear candles perform poorly.

  6. Allow the ear candle to burn to about 3 to 4 inches from the ear (no further than 2 inches!).  At this point your assistant is to remove the ear candle from your ear and extinguish the flame in the cup of water. Do not try to blow out the flame.  Then use one of the cotton Q-tip’s to clean out the outer ear lobe and canal.  You may use rubbing alcohol or an oil (almond oil) to assist in the cleaning of the ear.

  7. Repeat this procedure again with a second ear candle. No more than three treatments are necessary per session for each ear.

  8. Ear candles should be stored in a cool dry place. It is possible to store in a freezer, but never the refrigerator.  If the ear candles are exposed to excessive heat it will void the warranty and performance of the candle. In this case do not use the ear candles.  If exposed to heat the ear candle will have an altered appearance and have a soft texture.  Also, we have found that heat exposure can cause the pressurized wax layer that is placed on the outside of the candle to migrate to the inside of the candle.

Advanced Ear Candling Tips

  • Always keep the flame centered over the top opening.

  • With scissors and a cup of water trim the ash stack when about ½ of the ear candle has burned. Before clipping drip the scissors in the cup of water. This will cause the ash to stick to the shears and not “fly-away”.

  • For advanced users – about mid-way through the burning process you can clear debris’ from the tapered end of the ear candle with a tooth pick if necessary. To do this have the assistant lift the ear candle vertically to clear the opening. Be careful!

  • For best results have your assistant clip the ash top at the mid-way point while at the same time clear the tapered end with a toothpick. This should be done at least 3 feet away from the person receiving treatment, while holding the ear candle in a vertical position at all times.
